This is the 2TB, 7,200 RPM model in Seagate’s BarraCuda 3.5-inch desktop family. It connects over SATA 6Gb/s, reads at up to 220MB/s sustained on the outer tracks and carries a 256MB multi-segmented cache. The unit is recertified: it has been through Seagate’s return and test process and passed as fully working, which makes it a cost-effective way to add a couple of terabytes to a desktop that already boots from an SSD.

Why 7,200 RPM

Compared with a 5,400 RPM drive, the faster spindle shortens seek times and raises sustained throughput, which you notice when loading large game maps from the drive, scrubbing through video footage or restoring a backup. Seagate’s Multi-Tier Caching Technology adds DRAM and media cache on top to keep small writes feeling quick.

Intended use

The ST2000DM008 uses shingled magnetic recording and is rated for 55TB of workload per year and 600,000 load/unload cycles, figures that suit desktop PCs, all-in-ones and home servers. It is not intended for RAID NAS arrays or surveillance recorders, where Seagate’s IronWolf and SkyHawk ranges apply.
