The Gigabyte 120GB SSD (GP-GSTFS31120GNTD) is a straightforward 2.5-inch SATA 6Gb/s drive rated at up to 500MB/s sequential read and 380MB/s sequential write, with random performance of up to 50,000 read and 60,000 write IOPS. Those figures are typical of a good SATA drive and are enough to make Windows boot in seconds and applications open without the delays of a hard drive. At 120GB it is intended as an operating-system drive for machines that keep their data elsewhere.

Where 120GB makes sense

Point-of-sale terminals, reception desk PCs, digital signage players, thin clients and small servers that boot locally but store on a network all need a fast, reliable system drive without paying for capacity they will never fill. It also suits reviving an old laptop or desktop for light web and office use.

Reliability and support

Gigabyte rates the drive at two million hours MTBF and 75TB written, and supports TRIM and S.M.A.R.T. for wear management and health monitoring. Operating temperature is 0 to 70 degrees C. The drive draws around 2.2W reading and 2.6W writing, dropping to 170mW idle. It carries a limited three-year warranty, or 75TB written, whichever comes first.

Fitting

Standard 2.5-inch, 7mm-thick case (69.85 x 7 x 100mm) with SATA data and power connectors; it fits laptop bays and desktop 2.5-inch mounts. Punch Technology can fit it as the boot drive in a basic office build.
