The ST2000DM008 is the 7,200 RPM member of Seagate’s BarraCuda 3.5-inch desktop range. It sustains up to 220MB/s on the outer tracks over SATA 6Gb/s and carries a 256MB multi-segmented cache, making it one of the faster mechanical drives for a desktop PC. This unit is supplied recertified, meaning it has been returned to Seagate’s channel, tested and passed as fully functional, and is priced accordingly for use as a secondary drive.

Speed where a hard drive still matters

An SSD should run the operating system, but a 7,200 RPM drive with a large cache remains a good home for a game library that will not fit on the SSD, for project files and for video footage that is read sequentially. Seagate’s Multi-Tier Caching Technology combines the DRAM and media cache to absorb write bursts, so everyday copying stays responsive.

Recording and workload

The drive uses shingled magnetic recording (SMR) and is rated for a 55TB per year workload with 600,000 load/unload cycles, which is right for desktop and home-office use rather than continuous NAS or surveillance duty. Typical operating power is 5.1W with 3.9W idle.
