BarraCuda is Seagate’s mainstream 3.5-inch desktop range and has been the default bulk-storage drive in PCs for many years. The 4TB model spins at 5,400 RPM, has a 256MB multi-segmented cache and sustains up to 190MB/s on the outer tracks over a SATA 6Gb/s interface. This unit is supplied recertified: it has been returned, tested and confirmed working, which brings the cost down for a drive that will spend its life holding files rather than running the operating system.

Multi-Tier Caching

Seagate’s Multi-Tier Caching Technology uses the drive’s DRAM and on-platter media cache to smooth out bursts of writes, so day-to-day copying feels quicker than the spindle speed alone would suggest. The drive uses shingled magnetic recording (SMR), which is well suited to storage that is mostly written once and read many times, such as photo and video libraries and backup sets.

Quiet and efficient

At 5,400 RPM the drive is quiet and draws about 3.7W in typical operation and 2.5W idling, with low-power standby modes that suit an always-on home server or office PC. It is rated for a workload of 55TB per year, which is appropriate for desktop and home-server duty rather than NAS or surveillance use.

Fitting

Standard 3.5-inch footprint (20.2 x 101.85 x 146.99mm, 490g) with SATA data and power connectors. Punch Technology can install it as a secondary storage drive in a new build.
