Gigabyte Z790 Gaming X AX DDR5 ATX Motherboard (Open Box)
An open-box Z790 ATX board for 12th to 14th Gen Intel Core with DDR5, a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot, four M.2 slots and Wi-Fi 6E.
The Z790 Gaming X AX is Gigabyte’s mid-range Z790 board, giving you the overclocking and storage features of the Z790 chipset without the cost of the Aorus range. This unit is open box, so the packaging has been opened, but it is a complete board for anyone building an Intel LGA1700 system with 14th, 13th or 12th Gen Core, Pentium Gold or Celeron processors. It is a sensible choice for a DDR5 gaming PC that needs plenty of drive connections and built-in wireless. Punch can fit this board as part of a new custom build.
Processor and memory
Four DDR5 DIMM slots take up to 256GB (64GB per module) in dual channel, with Gigabyte listing support from 4000 and 4800MT/s up to 7600MT/s when overclocked, plus XMP profiles. ECC unbuffered modules are accepted but run in non-ECC mode.
Expansion and storage
The main graphics slot runs at PCIe 5.0 x16. Two further full-length slots run at PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 3.0 x4 from the chipset for capture, network or storage cards. Four M.2 slots are fitted: one from the processor at PCIe 4.0 x4 (22110 and 2280 drives), two from the chipset at PCIe 4.0 x4, and a fourth that supports both SATA and PCIe 4.0 x4 drives. Six SATA 6Gb/s ports are available for hard drives and 2.5-inch SSDs.
Connectivity and audio
The rear panel has a USB Type-C port at USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps), two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 and four USB 2.0 ports, DisplayPort and HDMI 2.0 outputs for processors with integrated graphics, a Realtek 2.5GbE LAN port, optical S/PDIF out, two audio jacks and two antenna connectors. Wireless is Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3 (Intel AX210 on PCB rev 1.0, Intel AX211 on rev 1.1 or Realtek RTL8852CE on rev 1.2), and sound is handled by a Realtek codec supporting up to 7.1 channels. Internal headers add a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C front connector, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 header for two ports and two USB 2.0 headers for four ports.
Ideal for
- Value-led 12th to 14th Gen Intel gaming builds with DDR5
- Systems that need four M.2 slots and six SATA ports
- Buyers who want Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5GbE without stepping up to an Aorus board
