A mainstream PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD that gets close to Gen4 flagship speeds.

The WD Blue SN5100 1TB (model WDS100T5B0E-00CPE0) is Western Digital’s current mainstream NVMe drive, built with SanDisk QLC 3D CBA NAND and nCache 4.0 technology. It is aimed at creators, professionals and general users who want a fast primary drive for Windows, applications, photo and video editing and games, without stepping up to the WD_BLACK range. Punch can fit it as the boot drive in a new home or office build.

Performance

The 1TB model is rated at up to 7100MB/s sequential read and 6700MB/s sequential write, which Sandisk states is 30 per cent faster than the previous SN5000 generation. Random performance is rated at up to 1 million IOPS read and 1.3 million IOPS write, so the drive stays responsive with many small files and background tasks. nCache 4.0 uses part of the NAND as a fast write buffer so large project folders copy quickly.

Efficiency and reliability

Average power draw is a low 3.9W for both reads and writes, dropping to 4mW in sleep, so the drive runs cool without a dedicated heatsink in most desktop cases. It is rated for 600TB total bytes written and backed by a five-year limited warranty, whichever comes first, with an MTTF of 1.75 million hours. Acronis True Image for SanDisk is available for migrating your existing installation, and the SanDisk Dashboard monitors drive health and firmware.

Compatibility

The SN5100 is a standard M.2 2280 drive at 2.38mm thick and 5.7g, requiring an M-key NVMe slot. PCIe Gen4 is needed for full speed and it is backward compatible with PCIe Gen3 slots. It operates at drive-reported temperatures from 0 to 85 degrees C and supports TCG Pyrite 2.01.
