The Seagate BarraCuda 20TB (model ST20000DM001) is a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive for desktop PCs, all-in-ones, home servers and entry-level direct-attached storage. It offers an enormous amount of space at a low cost per terabyte, making it the practical choice for bulk data such as video archives, photo libraries, backups and large game collections that do not need SSD speed. Punch can fit it in a new build as a secondary drive next to an NVMe SSD used for Windows and applications.

Performance

The drive runs at 7200rpm with a 512MB multi-segmented cache and a SATA 6Gb/s interface, giving a maximum sustained transfer rate of 190MB/s. Seagate’s Multi-Tier Caching Technology uses that cache to smooth out bursts of activity so file copies and media playback stay fluid. It uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR), which keeps sustained write speeds consistent when transferring very large folders.

Reliability

Seagate rates the drive for a workload of 120TB per year and 2400 power-on hours per year, and backs it with a two-year limited warranty. Those figures suit a desktop that is switched on during the day; for continuous 24/7 NAS or server duty a NAS or enterprise-class drive is a better match. Typical power draw is 8.9W operating and 6.7W idle, and the drive operates between 10 and 60 degrees C.
