The WD_BLACK SN8100 1TB (model WDS100T1X0M-00CMT0) is the PCIe Gen 5.0 x4 flagship in the WD_BLACK range, built on TLC 3D CBA NAND with an onboard DRAM cache. It is aimed at gaming PCs and workstations that want the fastest storage available, and its low power draw means it runs cooler than many Gen 5 drives. Punch can fit it as the boot drive in a new PCIe 5.0 build under the motherboard’s M.2 heatsink.

Performance

The 1TB model is rated at up to 14,900MB/s sequential read and 11,000MB/s sequential write, with random performance of up to 1.6 million IOPS read and 2.4 million IOPS write. nCache 4.0 technology keeps large transfers fast, and Microsoft DirectStorage support helps compatible games load textures with less CPU work. Average active power is quoted at 6.2W reading and 6.1W writing, which Sandisk states is over 100 per cent more efficient than its previous Gen4 drive.

Reliability and security

The drive is rated for 600TB total bytes written with a five-year limited warranty, whichever comes first, and Sandisk quotes an MTTF of up to 1.75 million hours. TCG Opal 2.02 hardware encryption is supported. The SanDisk Dashboard for Windows monitors drive health, keeps firmware up to date and can turn on Game Mode automatically, and Acronis True Image for SanDisk is included for cloning an existing drive.

Compatibility

A PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot is needed for full speed; the drive is backward compatible with PCIe Gen4 and Gen3 slots at reduced speed. It uses the standard M.2 2280 form factor at 2.38mm thick and 7.5g, so it fits under motherboard heatsinks, and it operates at drive-reported temperatures from 0 to 85 degrees C. Windows 10 or later is supported.
