The Samsung 990 PRO 1TB (model MZ-V9P1T0BW) is a PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 drive using Samsung V-NAND TLC, an in-house controller and 1GB of LPDDR4 cache. It is aimed at gamers, creators and professionals who want the quickest boot and application drive their PCIe 4.0 platform can support, and it is also compatible with the PlayStation 5. Punch can fit it as the primary drive in a new build.
Performance
Samsung rates the 1TB model at up to 7450MB/s sequential read and 6900MB/s sequential write, with random performance of up to 1,200,000 IOPS read and 1,550,000 IOPS write at queue depth 32. Low queue depth performance, which matters most for everyday responsiveness, is rated at 22,000 IOPS read and 80,000 IOPS write. Intelligent TurboWrite uses part of the drive as a fast SLC buffer to keep write speeds high during large transfers.
Efficiency and reliability
The 990 PRO improved performance per watt by over 50 per cent compared with the 980 PRO. Samsung quotes average active power of 5.5W reading and 5.2W writing, dropping to 50mW at idle, and a nickel-coated controller plus heat spreader label help manage temperatures. The 1TB model is rated for 600TB total bytes written and covered by a five-year limited warranty, whichever comes first, with an MTBF of 1.5 million hours.
Security and software
Hardware AES 256-bit full disk encryption with TCG Opal 2.0 and IEEE1667 support lets you secure the drive with BitLocker or eDrive. Samsung Magician software monitors drive health, applies firmware updates and can tune performance settings. The drive is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0 slots at reduced speed.
