The Samsung 9100 PRO 1TB (model MZ-VAP1T0BW) is a PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 drive built with Samsung V-NAND TLC, an in-house controller and 1GB of LPDDR4X cache. It is aimed at enthusiasts, content creators and anyone running AI or data-heavy applications who wants the fastest storage a modern desktop platform can support. Punch can fit it as the primary drive in a new PCIe 5.0 build with the M.2 heatsink that most current motherboards provide.

Performance

Samsung rates the 1TB drive at up to 14,700MB/s sequential read and 13,300MB/s sequential write, with random performance of up to 1,850,000 IOPS read and 2,600,000 IOPS write. Those figures mean large project files, game assets and datasets load in a fraction of the time a PCIe 4.0 drive would take, and heavy multitasking stays responsive. A 5nm controller improves power efficiency compared with the previous generation, with Samsung quoting average draw of 7.6W when reading and 7.2W when writing.

Reliability and security

The 9100 PRO 1TB is rated for 600TB total bytes written with a five-year limited warranty, whichever comes first, and Samsung quotes an MTBF of 1.5 million hours. Hardware AES 256-bit encryption with TCG Opal and IEEE1667 support lets you protect data with Windows BitLocker or similar tools without a performance penalty. Samsung Magician software provides health monitoring, firmware updates and drive optimisation.

Compatibility

Full performance requires a motherboard and CPU with a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot, such as current Intel Core and AMD Ryzen platforms. The drive is backward compatible with PCIe 4.0 and 3.0 slots at reduced speed. This version ships without a heatsink, so it should be paired with a motherboard M.2 heatsink for sustained loads.
