The Core i5-11400F is from Intel’s 11th Gen Rocket Lake desktop family, built on the 14nm process. It provides six cores and twelve threads with Hyper-Threading, a 2.6GHz base clock and a 4.4GHz maximum turbo, and was long a favourite for value gaming PCs. The F suffix means there is no integrated graphics, so it needs a dedicated graphics card. It fits the LGA1200 socket, which makes it a straightforward upgrade for existing 400 and 500 series Intel boards.
Performance
Rocket Lake introduced a newer core design to Intel’s desktop range with a meaningful gain in work done per clock over 10th Gen. The 11400F’s six cores, twelve threads and 12MB of Intel Smart Cache handle modern games well alongside a mid-range graphics card, and cope comfortably with streaming, office work and everyday multitasking. Turbo Boost 2.0 manages the clocks automatically; the multiplier is locked.
Platform and connectivity
The processor supports dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory with a maximum of 128GB and 50GB/s of bandwidth. It provides 20 lanes of PCIe 4.0, enough for a graphics card at x16 plus a Gen 4 NVMe drive at x4 when used on a 500 series board. Punch can fit it in a new build with a compatible B560 or similar LGA1200 motherboard.
Cooling and noise
With a 65W TDP and a 100°C maximum junction temperature, the 11400F is easy to keep cool and quiet. Its thermal solution specification is PCG 2019C, so any mainstream LGA1200 air cooler is more than adequate.
