The Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9955WX is the entry point to AMD’s Threadripper PRO 9000 WX series (codename Shimada Peak). It uses sixteen Zen 5 cores with 32 threads, a 4.5GHz base clock and a boost of up to 5.4GHz, so it is unusually fast per core for a workstation chip. It suits professionals whose software mixes lightly threaded interactive work with the need for workstation-class memory bandwidth, capacity and expansion: CAD and engineering, video and colour work, audio production, data analysis and multi-GPU systems.

Performance

Zen 5 cores built on TSMC’s 4nm process give the 9955WX excellent single-threaded responsiveness alongside 32 threads of parallel capacity, with 16MB of L2 and 64MB of L3 cache. The processor is unlocked, and supports AMD EXPO memory profiles, Precision Boost Overdrive and Curve Optimizer for tuning on a supporting board.

Platform and connectivity

The 9955WX uses the sTR5 socket and is supported by the WRX90, TRX50 and Pro 695 chipsets. Its memory controller handles eight channels of DDR5 registered memory at up to 6400 MT/s with ECC enabled by default, giving far more bandwidth and capacity than any desktop platform. Expansion is equally generous, with 148 PCIe lanes in total, 144 usable and 128 of them PCIe 5.0, so several graphics cards or accelerators, multiple NVMe drives and fast networking can all run at full speed. AMD PRO manageability and security features, including DASH support, AMD Memory Guard and firmware TPM, are built in. Punch can build the 9955WX into a complete workstation with a WRX90 or TRX50 board and registered DDR5 memory.

Cooling and compatibility

The default TDP is 350W with a 95°C maximum operating temperature, so a cooler designed for the sTR5 socket and this heat output is essential; none is included with the tray processor. There is no integrated graphics, so a discrete graphics card is required.
