The Ryzen 7 5700X is one of the most capable processors available for AMD’s long-running AM4 socket. Based on the Zen 3 architecture (codename Vermeer) and TSMC’s 7nm process, it has eight cores and sixteen threads, a 3.4GHz base clock and a maximum boost of 4.6GHz. It is a strong choice for gaming PCs, home content creation and productivity systems, and it is particularly attractive for anyone upgrading an existing AM4 board rather than moving to a new platform.
Performance
Zen 3 places all eight cores on a single compute die with a shared 32MB L3 cache, which helps games and latency-sensitive applications. Sixteen threads give plenty of headroom for streaming while gaming, video editing, code compilation and large spreadsheets. The multiplier is unlocked and Precision Boost 2 handles clock speed automatically, so there is little to configure for stock use.
Platform and connectivity
AMD lists the X570, X470, X370, B550, B450, B350 and A520 chipsets as supported, although older boards will need a BIOS update for Ryzen 5000 series processors. Memory is dual-channel DDR4 at up to 3200 MT/s with a maximum of 128GB, and ECC is supported where the motherboard allows. The processor provides PCIe 4.0 with 24 lanes in total (20 usable), enough for a graphics card and a fast NVMe drive at full speed on a B550 or X570 board.
Cooling and compatibility
The 5700X has a 65W default TDP and a maximum operating temperature of 90°C. No cooler is included, so a separate air or liquid cooler is required; a mid-range tower cooler is more than sufficient. There is no integrated graphics, so a dedicated graphics card is needed. Punch can fit the 5700X in a new AM4 build with an appropriate cooler and board.
