The Ryzen 3 4100 is one of the most affordable ways into AMD’s AM4 platform. Built on the Zen 2 architecture (codename Renoir) and TSMC’s 7nm process, it provides four cores and eight threads running at a 3.8GHz base clock and boosting to 4.0GHz. It is a sensible choice for home and office PCs, light gaming and general-purpose family computers where a dedicated graphics card is already planned, because the 4100 has no integrated graphics of its own.
Performance
Simultaneous multithreading gives the four physical cores eight threads to work with, which keeps everyday multitasking, web browsing, office software and media playback responsive. The 2MB of L2 and 4MB of L3 cache are modest by modern standards, so this is a processor for sensible workloads rather than heavy content creation. Precision Boost 2 manages the clock speed automatically, and the multiplier is unlocked should you wish to experiment on a suitable board.
Platform and compatibility
The 4100 fits the AM4 socket and AMD lists the X570, X470, B550, B450, B350, A520 and A320 chipsets as supported. Memory is dual-channel DDR4 at up to 3200 MT/s, with a maximum of 128GB, and the processor provides PCIe 3.0 with 24 lanes in total (20 usable). Some older boards will need a BIOS update before they recognise a Ryzen 4000 series chip; Punch can build it into a new system with a compatible board and the correct firmware already applied.
Cooling and noise
With a default TDP of 65W the 4100 is easy to keep cool. The boxed version includes AMD’s Wraith Stealth, a compact low-profile cooler that is quiet at this level of heat output and needs no separate purchase. The maximum operating temperature is 95°C.
