The Seagate BarraCuda 16TB (model ST16000DM001) is a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive aimed at desktop PCs, all-in-ones, home servers and entry-level direct-attached storage. It gives you a huge amount of space at a far lower cost per terabyte than solid-state storage, which makes it the sensible choice for bulk data that does not need SSD speed: video archives, photo collections, backups and games you are not currently playing. Punch can fit it in a new build as a secondary drive alongside an NVMe SSD for Windows and applications.

Performance

The drive spins at 7200rpm and carries a 512MB multi-segmented cache, delivering a maximum sustained transfer rate of 190MB/s over its SATA 6Gb/s interface. Seagate’s Multi-Tier Caching Technology uses the cache to smooth out bursts of reads and writes, so everyday file copies and media playback feel responsive. It uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR) rather than shingled recording, which keeps sustained write performance consistent when you are moving large folders onto the drive.

Reliability

Seagate rates the BarraCuda 16TB for a workload of 120TB per year and 2400 power-on hours per year, and it is backed by a two-year limited warranty. Those ratings reflect its desktop positioning; if you need a drive for continuous 24/7 server or NAS duty, an enterprise or NAS-class drive is the better fit. Typical power draw is 8.9W when operating and 6.7W at idle, and the drive operates between 10 and 60 degrees C.
