What it’s like to use
This is a machine built to hold a high frame rate at 1080p rather than to chase a resolution it would struggle with. The Radeon RX 9060 is the entry point into AMD’s RDNA 4 generation, and it arrives with the same feature set as its bigger siblings – hardware ray tracing, FSR 4 upscaling and the Adrenalin software stack – simply with less raw throughput behind it. At 1080p that gap largely closes, which is why competitive titles run well clear of what a 144Hz monitor asks for.
Six Ryzen cores mean the processor is rarely the thing holding you back, and there is enough headroom to stream or record while you play without the game giving ground. Thermally it has room to breathe: the Thermalright Assassin X 90 SE is rated to 140W against the 5600X’s 88W, so the cooler is not working at its limit even under sustained load, which in practice means lower fan speeds and a quieter desk.
There is somewhere to go later, too. The 650W supply leaves headroom for a more demanding graphics card, a second M.2 drive can be added alongside the first, and two of the four memory slots are still free. Worth knowing before you buy: this is an AM4 platform, which AMD has now finished with, so a future processor upgrade means a Ryzen 5000 series chip rather than anything newer. For most people that is a fair trade for what the platform costs today, but it is the honest limit of the machine.

Where does the Viper X sit in the range?
The Viper X is the entry point into our RX 9060 series. It is the machine to pick if you play at 1080p and want frame rates that keep a high-refresh monitor busy, without paying for graphics performance you would only use at a higher resolution.
If your monitor is 1440p, or you expect to move to one, the RX 9060 XT builds are the better starting point – the XT has more graphics hardware enabled, and the 16GB versions carry the memory headroom that higher resolutions and high-detail texture packs ask for. Buyers chasing 4K or heavy ray tracing should look further up the range again.
Frequently Asked Questions
1080p, at high refresh rates. That is where the RX 9060 8GB is at its most convincing, and where the frame rates above were measured. It will drive a 1440p monitor, but you would be trading settings to hold a comfortable frame rate in newer titles. If 1440p is your target, the RX 9060 XT models are the better starting point.
At 1080p, yes, for the great majority of games at high settings. Video memory becomes the constraint at higher resolutions, with high-resolution texture packs, or with heavy ray tracing – and when a card runs short it tends to stutter rather than simply slow down. If you expect to move to 1440p or keep the machine for many years, the 16GB RX 9060 XT builds give you more room.
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 renders the game at a lower resolution and reconstructs it using a machine-learning model, which raises frame rates while keeping the image sharp. It needs support from the game itself. The frame rates quoted above were measured with it switched off, so they are a floor rather than a best case.
