Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Cable 1.8m

A 1.8 m passive cable for driving a DVI monitor from a PC or laptop with a Mini DisplayPort output.

This cable connects a Mini DisplayPort output on a graphics card, laptop or small form factor PC directly to a monitor with a DVI-D input, with no separate adapter box in the chain. It is the simple answer when a newer machine has only DisplayPort-family outputs but you want to keep using an older DVI monitor, or when a second screen on a desk only has a DVI socket. At 1.8 m it reaches comfortably from a tower under the desk to a monitor on top of it.

How it works

The cable is passive: it does not contain a signal converter. Instead it relies on the DisplayPort dual-mode (DP++) feature of the source device, which lets the port output a DVI-compatible signal when it detects this kind of cable. Nearly all desktop graphics cards, motherboards with Mini DisplayPort outputs and laptops support dual-mode, but if you are unsure, check for the DP++ mark next to the port or ask Punch to confirm before ordering.

Resolution and signal

DVI single-link, which is what a passive DisplayPort adapter provides, carries up to 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz. That covers Full HD and 16:10 office monitors, but it will not drive a 2560 x 1440 or 4K screen, and it does not support higher refresh rates. The cable carries digital video only, so any audio must go over a separate connection or the PC’s audio output.

Compatibility

The DVI-D plug fits DVI-D and DVI-I monitor sockets. It is a one-way cable: the Mini DisplayPort end must go to the PC and the DVI end to the display; it cannot be used to connect a DVI graphics output to a DisplayPort monitor. Punch can supply this cable with a new build so the system arrives ready to plug into an existing monitor.

Ideal for

  • Connecting a Mini DisplayPort graphics card or laptop to an existing DVI monitor
  • Adding a second DVI screen to a compact office PC
  • Replacing a lost or damaged monitor lead on a Mini DisplayPort system
