Threadripper™
Three Platforms. One Range.
Whether you need outstanding value, strong multi-threaded performance, or the absolute maximum in cores, memory bandwidth, and PCIe connectivity — there is a Threadripper platform for your workload.
Overview
AMD’s Threadripper family spans multiple generations and platforms, which means there is no single “right” choice — the right workstation depends on your workload, your budget, and what you actually need from your system. We range systems across three distinct platforms so that you are never paying for capability you don’t need, nor compromising on what you do.
All Punch Technology Threadripper workstations are built and tested in the UK, covered by a 3-year parts and labour warranty, and backed by our expert configuration and support team. Whether you choose a Threadripper PRO 5975WX for outstanding multi-GPU value, a Threadripper 9970X for Zen 5 performance at a competitive price, or a Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series system for maximum throughput across every dimension — you are purchasing a professional workstation built to perform.
Platform Guide
Understanding the key differences between each platform helps you choose the right workstation for your budget and your workload.
Value Platform · Zen 3
The 5975WX remains a compelling choice for workloads that demand high PCIe lane counts — particularly multi-GPU configurations — where the cost of the processor and platform is a significant consideration. Built on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture, it offers 32 cores, 64 threads, and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes via the WRX80 platform, providing the I/O bandwidth to support multiple high-bandwidth GPUs or NVMe arrays at a substantially lower system cost than current-generation PRO platforms.
Best for
Multi-GPU AI inference workstations · 3D rendering on a budget · Simulation and data workloads requiring high PCIe bandwidth · Cost-conscious professional buyers
Key Specs
32 cores / 64 threads
Boost up to 4.5 GHz
144 MB L3 cache
8-channel DDR4-3200 ECC RDIMM
128 PCIe 4.0 lanes (WRX80)
Up to 2 TB memory
Performance Platform · Zen 5
The Threadripper 9970X is AMD’s current-generation HEDT (High-End Desktop) processor, offering Zen 5 performance at a significantly lower price than the PRO 9000 WX-Series. With 32 cores, 64 threads, and boost speeds of up to 5.4 GHz on the TRX50 platform, it delivers outstanding multi-threaded throughput for creative and technical workloads. Like both PRO platforms, it uses DDR5 ECC RDIMM memory across 4 channels, and its 80–88 usable PCIe 5.0 lanes are sufficient to run four full-length x16 GPU slots simultaneously. The trade-offs versus the PRO platform are fewer memory channels (limiting peak memory bandwidth and maximum capacity) and the absence of AMD PRO Technologies such as Memory Guard encryption and DASH remote manageability.
Best for
3D rendering and VFX · Video editing and content creation · Software compilation · AI and machine learning workloads including multi-GPU configurations · Professionals wanting Zen 5 performance without PRO platform costs
Key Specs

Maximum Platform · Zen 5
The Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series represents the pinnacle of AMD workstation computing. Built on Zen 5 and running on the WRX90 platform, these processors offer up to 96 cores, 8-channel DDR5-6400 ECC RDIMM memory with up to 2 TB capacity, and 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes. This is the platform of choice where you need the maximum in CPU throughput, memory bandwidth, and I/O simultaneously — for cinematic VFX rendering, dense multi-GPU AI workstations, large-scale scientific simulation, or any workload where compromise is not an option.

Use Cases
🎬
CPU rendering in V-Ray, Blender, Arnold, and Cinema 4D scales directly with core count and IPC. All three platforms perform well here — the 9970X and PRO 9000 WX-Series benefit from Zen 5’s IPC uplift and AVX-512 support, while the PRO 9000 WX-Series delivers the highest core counts for the most demanding studio pipelines.
🖥️
All three platforms support multi-GPU builds. The 9970X provides 80–88 PCIe 5.0 lanes — sufficient for four full-length x16 GPU slots with bandwidth to spare. The PRO 5975WX and PRO 9000 WX-Series offer 128 lanes, providing additional headroom for dense configurations combining multiple GPUs with high-speed NVMe storage and networking simultaneously.
⚙️
CAD, FEA, CFD, and BIM workloads benefit from high core counts, fast clock speeds, and large ECC memory capacity. The 9970X and PRO 9000 WX-Series offer Zen 5’s enhanced IPC and DDR5 bandwidth. The PRO platforms support up to 2 TB of ECC memory for the most demanding large-dataset workflows.
FAQ
All three platforms in our range support DDR5 ECC RDIMM memory — this is standard across the Threadripper 9000 family. The distinction is in the number of memory channels: the 9970X (TRX50) provides 4-channel ECC DDR5, while both PRO platforms (WRX80 and WRX90) provide 8-channel ECC memory, roughly doubling peak memory bandwidth and maximum capacity. The PRO platforms additionally include AMD PRO Technologies — features such as Memory Guard full memory encryption and DASH remote manageability — which the standard Threadripper 9970X does not offer. If enterprise security and manageability features are required, or if your workload needs maximum memory bandwidth and capacity, the PRO platform is the right choice.
Yes — for the right workload. The 5975WX remains a strong choice for multi-GPU workstations where PCIe lane count is the primary requirement and Zen 5 IPC uplift is less of a priority. It provides 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes and 8-channel DDR4 ECC memory at a significantly lower system cost than the current-generation PRO 9000 WX-Series. For AI inference workloads driven primarily by GPU performance, this remains an excellent value platform.
The 9970X and the PRO 9975WX both offer 32 Zen 5 cores and identical boost clocks of up to 5.4 GHz. The 9970X runs on the more affordable TRX50 platform with 4-channel DDR5 ECC RDIMM memory and 80–88 usable PCIe 5.0 lanes. If your workload doesn’t require maximum memory bandwidth, very large memory capacity, or the AMD PRO enterprise features, the 9970X delivers equivalent CPU performance for a meaningfully lower total system cost.
All three platforms support multi-GPU configurations. The 9970X on TRX50 provides 80–88 usable PCIe 5.0 lanes — enough to run four x16 GPU slots simultaneously, which is typically the physical maximum of any workstation chassis, with lanes remaining for NVMe storage. The PRO 5975WX (WRX80) and PRO 9000 WX-Series (WRX90) both offer 128 PCIe lanes, providing additional headroom when combining multiple GPUs with high-bandwidth NVMe RAID arrays or high-speed networking simultaneously. Our team can advise on the optimal board and chassis configuration for your workload.
Yes. All of our Threadripper workstations can be configured to your specific requirements, including GPU selection, memory capacity, storage, and cooling. Our pre-configured systems provide an excellent starting point, but if your workload has specific requirements our team will design the right system for you.
Threadripper processors are outstanding professional workstation CPUs, but they are not optimised for gaming. Most games benefit more from fast single-core performance than from extreme multi-threading, and the platform premium is not justified for gaming use alone. If you need a workstation that also handles gaming, contact our team and we’ll advise on the most sensible configuration.
