A 10-core 14th generation Core i5 that gives everyday and light gaming PCs plenty of headroom without a large power or cooling budget.

The Core i5-14400 is Intel’s mainstream desktop processor for the LGA1700 platform. It uses Intel’s hybrid design, pairing six Performance-cores with four Efficient-cores for a total of sixteen threads, so it copes well with a busy desktop of browser tabs, office applications and background tasks while still having the single-core speed that games and general software rely on. This is the boxed retail version, which comes with Intel’s stock cooler in the box, so it is a complete package for a straightforward build or a processor upgrade on an existing 600 or 700 series board.

Cores and clocks

The six Performance-cores run at a 2.5GHz base and reach a maximum turbo of 4.7GHz, while the four Efficient-cores run from 1.8GHz up to 3.5GHz. Intel’s scheduler steers demanding foreground work to the P-cores and lighter background work to the E-cores. There is 20MB of Intel Smart Cache and a further 9.5MB of L2 cache. The multiplier is locked, so this is not an overclocking part, which keeps thermals predictable on a standard cooler.

Platform and memory

The i5-14400 fits socket LGA1700 and supports either DDR5 at up to 4800 MT/s or DDR4 at up to 3200 MT/s depending on the motherboard, with a maximum of 192GB. It provides 20 PCIe lanes across PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 for a graphics card and a fast NVMe drive. Intel UHD Graphics 730 is built in, so a PC can run without a discrete graphics card for office and media use.

Power and cooling

Processor base power is 65W with a maximum turbo power of 148W. The boxed cooler is adequate for stock operation; a tower air cooler will run quieter under sustained load. Punch can fit this processor in a new build with the cooling and memory to suit.
