The Gigabyte B850M D3HP is the sensible starting point for an AM5 system on a budget. It supports the full range of AMD Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 Series processors and takes up to 256GB of DDR5 across four DIMMs at speeds up to 8200 MT/s with EXPO or XMP profiles. Unlike older B650 boards, the main graphics slot runs at PCIe 5.0 x16 with a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 chip, so it will not hold back a current graphics card. Punch can build it into a compact system with a matching case, memory and cooler.

Storage and expansion

Two M.2 slots come straight from the processor: the first supports PCIe 5.0 x4 for the latest NVMe drives (2580 or 2280 length) and the second runs at PCIe 4.0 x4 and accepts drives up to 22110. Both have Gigabyte’s easy-fit M.2 latches. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports with RAID support cover hard drives, and a second PCIe 3.0 x16-length slot wired at x4 is available for a capture, sound or 10Gb network card.

Connectivity

The rear panel has a USB Type-C port and three Type-A ports at USB 3.2 Gen 1, two USB 2.0 ports, a PS/2 port, HDMI 2.1 and two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs for the processor’s Radeon graphics (triple-display capable), Realtek Gigabit Ethernet, three audio jacks and a Q-Flash Plus button. There is no Wi-Fi on this model, so it suits desks with a wired connection. Front-panel headers add a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C, two Gen 1 and four USB 2.0 ports.

Cooling and lighting

Four fan and pump headers (CPU, CPU/pump, system, system/pump) with water-flow detection, two addressable RGB Gen 2 headers and one RGB header, a TPM header and Q-Flash Plus for BIOS updates without a CPU give the board more flexibility than its entry-level chipset suggests.
