The Ryzen 9 7900 is the efficient member of AMD’s Ryzen 9 7000 family. It has the same twelve cores and twenty-four threads as the 7900X, built on Zen 4 (codename Raphael) with TSMC 5nm compute dies, but runs at a 65W default TDP with a 3.7GHz base clock and boosts to 5.4GHz. That makes it well suited to content creation, software development, engineering and gaming systems where you want a lot of cores without the heat and noise of a 170W part.
Performance
Two compute dies give the 7900 a total of 12MB L2 and 64MB L3 cache, and twenty-four threads make short work of video encoding, rendering, compiling and virtual machines. Single-threaded performance remains high thanks to the 5.4GHz boost, so games and everyday applications feel quick too. The processor is unlocked, supports AMD EXPO memory profiles, Precision Boost Overdrive and Curve Optimizer, and is managed automatically by Precision Boost 2.
Platform and connectivity
The 7900 fits the AM5 socket and AMD lists the A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870 and X870E chipsets as supported. Memory is dual-channel DDR5 at up to 5200 MT/s with a maximum of 128GB, and ECC is supported with a suitable motherboard. The processor provides PCIe 5.0 with 28 lanes in total (24 usable) for a graphics card and Gen 5 NVMe storage, and includes basic Radeon integrated graphics with two graphics cores, enough to drive a display without a dedicated card.
Cooling and noise
Thanks to the 65W default TDP the 7900 runs cooler and quieter than the X-series parts, with a maximum operating temperature of 95°C. This version does not include a cooler, so a separate air or liquid cooler is needed; Punch can fit the 7900 in a new build with a suitable cooler and AM5 board.
