The Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5975WX sits in AMD’s professional workstation range, built on the Zen 3 architecture (codename Chagall PRO) using TSMC’s 7nm process. It provides 32 cores and 64 threads, a 3.6GHz base clock and boosts to 4.5GHz, backed by a very large 128MB L3 cache. It is designed for people whose work scales across many cores: 3D rendering, video post-production, scientific and engineering simulation, software builds and heavily virtualised environments.
Performance
Zen 3 cores give the 5975WX strong per-core performance as well as sheer core count, so it remains responsive in interactive applications while a render or simulation runs in the background. The 16MB of L2 and 128MB of L3 cache keep large datasets close to the cores, and the multiplier is unlocked for those who want to tune it on a supporting board.
Platform and connectivity
The processor uses the sWRX8 socket found on WRX80 workstation motherboards. Its memory controller supports eight channels of DDR4 at up to 3200 MT/s, which is a major advantage over desktop platforms for memory-bandwidth-hungry work and very large memory capacities. PCIe 4.0 connectivity provides the lanes needed for multiple graphics cards or accelerators, several NVMe drives and high-speed networking in one system. Punch can build the 5975WX into a full workstation with a WRX80 board, registered memory and appropriate cooling.
Cooling and compatibility
With a default TDP of 280W and a maximum operating temperature of 95°C, the 5975WX needs a cooler designed for the sWRX8/sTRX4 mounting and this level of heat output; none is included in the tray package. There is no integrated graphics, so a discrete graphics card is required.
