AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 8 Core AM4 Processor (Boxed, No Cooler)
The fastest gaming processor for the AM4 platform, and the easiest way to give an existing DDR4 system a large step up in frame rates.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the eight-core Zen 3 processor that introduced AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology to the desktop. A second layer of cache is stacked on top of the processor die, taking the L3 cache to 96MB, three times that of a standard Ryzen 7 5800X. Games in particular respond strongly to that extra cache, which is why this processor still competes with much newer parts in gaming workloads. Because it uses socket AM4 and DDR4 memory, it drops into the large installed base of X570, B550, B450, X470 and A520 motherboards after a BIOS update, making it the natural end-of-the-line upgrade for an AM4 gaming PC.
Cores and cache
Eight cores and sixteen threads run from a 3.4GHz base to a 4.5GHz maximum boost with Precision Boost 2. The headline figure is the 96MB of L3 cache, backed by 4MB of L2 and 512KB of L1. Keeping more of a game’s working data on the processor cuts the time spent waiting on memory, which lifts minimum and average frame rates at 1080p and 1440p where the processor rather than the graphics card sets the pace. The cores are built on TSMC’s 7nm process with a 12nm I/O die, in a two-die package.
Platform
The processor fits socket AM4 and AMD lists support for the X570, X470, B550, B450 and A520 chipsets. It supports dual-channel DDR4 memory at up to DDR4-3200 with two modules and a maximum of 128GB, with ECC supported where the motherboard allows it. Twenty-four PCIe 4.0 lanes (20 usable) feed a graphics card and NVMe storage, with NVMe boot and RAID 0, 1 and 10 supported, and the processor itself provides four native USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and two SATA ports. There is no integrated graphics, so a discrete graphics card is required.
Cooling and packaging
This is the boxed retail version, but no cooler is included: AMD recommends a liquid cooler for the best performance and the 105W TDP with a 90°C maximum operating temperature means a good tower air cooler or a 240mm all-in-one is the sensible pairing. AMD’s current boxed version is the 10th Anniversary Edition, which includes a Carbice Ice Pad thermal pad. Punch can fit the processor and a matching cooler in a new AM4 build or as an upgrade.
Ideal for
- High-refresh 1080p and 1440p gaming PCs on a DDR4 platform
- Upgrading an existing AM4 system without changing motherboard or memory
- Gamers who want the strongest AM4 processor rather than a platform change
