The Core i7-14700K is the enthusiast Core i7 of Intel’s 14th generation. It combines eight Performance-cores with twelve Efficient-cores for 28 threads in total, which puts it close to the Core i9 for multi-threaded work such as video rendering, code compilation and 3D while keeping the high single-core turbo that games depend on. The K suffix means the multiplier is unlocked for overclocking on a Z-series board. It is sold as a boxed retail processor without a cooler, so it needs a capable tower air cooler or liquid cooler to be specified alongside it.

Cores and clocks

The Performance-cores run at a 3.4GHz base and up to 5.5GHz, with the processor’s maximum turbo frequency reaching 5.6GHz. The Efficient-cores run from 2.5GHz to 4.3GHz and handle background load so the P-cores stay free for the task in hand. There is 33MB of Intel Smart Cache backed by 28MB of L2.

Platform and memory

Socket LGA1700 boards with the 600 or 700 series chipsets are supported, with DDR5 at up to 5600 MT/s or DDR4 at up to 3200 MT/s and a maximum of 192GB. Twenty PCIe lanes across PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 feed the graphics card and primary NVMe drive. Intel UHD Graphics 770 is built in, which is useful as a fallback or for a second display alongside a discrete card.

Power and cooling

Processor base power is 125W and maximum turbo power 253W, so sustained all-core performance depends on cooling. A 240mm or 360mm liquid cooler or a large dual-tower air cooler is the sensible pairing. Punch can build this into a new system with the cooling and power supply matched to it.
