Punch Technology EPYC Pedestal Compute Server – AMD EPYC 9655P 96-Core Desk-Side HPC System

The Punch Technology EPYC Pedestal Compute Server is a quiet, desk-side AMD EPYC 9655P compute platform delivering 96 cores and 192 threads of Zen 5 performance in a full-tower chassis engineered for office and laboratory environments.

This EPYC pedestal compute server is built for engineers, researchers, and infrastructure teams who require data-centre-class CPU performance without rack infrastructure, noise, or accessibility constraints. At its core is the AMD EPYC 9655P, a 96-core Zen 5 processor with 192 threads, a 4.5GHz maximum boost clock, and 384MB of L3 cache, running on the Gigabyte MZ33-AR1 SP5 server motherboard with 384GB of DDR5 ECC RDIMM memory across all 12 memory channels. The result is a system that handles the most demanding sustained multi-threaded compute workloads while remaining quiet enough for shared office use. This desk-side AMD EPYC 9655P compute platform is built and tested in the UK and covered by a 3-year parts and labour warranty.

High-Performance NVMe Storage – WD Black SN7100

The 1TB WD Black SN7100 NVMe SSD provides the operating system, application, and dataset storage foundation for this platform, delivering sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,900MB/s over a PCIe Gen 4 x4 interface. Built on SanDisk’s BiCS8 218-layer TLC NAND and the Polaris 3 controller with Host Memory Buffer technology, the SN7100 is among the fastest PCIe Gen 4 drives available and is well suited to fast OS boot, rapid application loading, and responsive AI pipeline and dataset access. Additional high-performance storage can be added via PCIe expansion slots or the motherboard’s MCIO 8i ports, enabling multi-drive NVMe configurations as workload storage requirements grow.

AMD EPYC 9655P – Zen 5, 96 Cores, Full 12-Channel Memory

The AMD EPYC 9655P is built on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture and delivers 96 cores and 192 threads with a base clock of 2.6GHz and a maximum boost of 4.5GHz, backed by 384MB of L3 cache. The P designation indicates this processor is optimised for single-socket platforms, delivering identical performance to the standard 9655 at a lower cost by removing unused multi-socket capability. Critically, this system populates all 12 DIMM slots of the Gigabyte MZ33-AR1 with 384GB of DDR5 ECC RDIMM memory running at 5200MHz, ensuring full 12-channel memory bandwidth is available to the processor. This is the memory architecture EPYC is designed to exploit – each channel pair feeds a separate memory controller within the CPU, providing substantially higher aggregate bandwidth than any desktop or workstation platform. For memory-bound workloads including CFD simulation, FEA analysis, large dataset processing, and in-memory virtualisation, this bandwidth advantage is significant and measurable.

Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2 – Full-Tower, Low Acoustic Design

The Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2 is an exceptional full-tower chassis for a desk-side compute server, combining the internal volume required to house the SilverStone XE360-SP5 360mm AIO cooler, full-length expansion cards, and high airflow fans within a design that prioritises acoustic output. Four be quiet! Silent Wings 4 140mm PWM fans are fitted as standard – among the quietest 140mm fans available, running at low RPM under sustained load while maintaining strong airflow across the motherboard and expansion area. The Lian Li SX Platinum PSU adds further acoustic benefit through its fanless operation below 40% load, meaning the system runs in near-silence during lighter workloads and remains tolerably quiet even at full compute load. GPU clearance of up to 435mm and seven PCIe expansion slots provide substantial future expansion headroom.

Dual 10GbE, PCIe Gen 5 Expansion and Management LAN

The Gigabyte MZ33-AR1 provides dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports via Broadcom BCM57416 controllers with NCSI support, eliminating the need for add-in network adapters and ensuring high-bandwidth connectivity to shared storage, render farms, virtualisation hosts, and data pipelines is available out of the box. A dedicated 1GbE management LAN provides out-of-band server management independently of the primary network interfaces. PCIe Gen 5 expansion slots support future accelerator, networking, or high-speed storage upgrades, and multiple MCIO 8i ports enable direct NVMe storage expansion as workload requirements evolve. The NVIDIA T400 professional GPU handles display output across up to four monitors via four Mini-DisplayPort 1.4 connectors, providing a stable, certified display environment for console access, visualisation, and remote desktop workflows.

Ideal for

Why Desk-Side

No Rack Required. Full EPYC Performance.

No Rack Needed

Deploy enterprise-class EPYC compute without dedicated rack infrastructure, raised flooring, or data centre space. Plugs into a standard 13A socket and sits on a desk or under a workstation.

Office Acoustics

be quiet! Silent Wings 4 fans, a 360mm AIO cooler, and a fanless PSU below 40% load deliver far lower acoustic output than any rackmount server. Engineered to run sustained workloads without dominating a shared working environment.

Immediate Access

Sit alongside the user rather than in a separate server room. Direct physical access for storage expansion, GPU installation, and maintenance without requiring a data centre visit or IT team involvement.

Full EPYC I/O

All 12 memory channels populated, dual 10GbE networking, PCIe Gen 5 expansion, and MCIO storage ports – the complete SP5 platform capability in a pedestal form factor, with nothing compromised.

Compute Workloads

Built for Sustained Multi-Threaded Performance

Engineering Simulation

CFD, FEA, and EDA workloads require both high core counts and large memory capacity. With 96 cores and 384GB across 12 channels, this system handles complex multi-physics simulations that would otherwise require shared cluster access.

Virtualisation and Containers

96 cores and 384GB of ECC memory support dense virtualisation environments running dozens of concurrent VMs or containerised services. Dual 10GbE provides the network bandwidth these workloads demand between guest and host networks.

HPC and Research

Pre-processing, post-processing, and standalone compute nodes for scientific and academic workloads. The full 12-channel memory architecture delivers the aggregate bandwidth that memory-bound research applications rely on for performance.

Software and CI Builds

Large-scale software compilation and CI/CD build pipelines benefit directly from high core counts. 96 cores compress build times that would take hours on a conventional workstation into minutes, improving development cycle throughput.

Data Processing and Analytics

In-memory data processing, ETL pipelines, and analytical workloads that exceed the capacity of standard workstations. 384GB of ECC memory eliminates the dataset-size constraints that force jobs onto slower disk-based processing paths.

GPU Compute Ready

PCIe Gen 5 expansion slots accommodate high-performance GPU compute accelerators where workloads also require GPU parallelism. The platform can be configured with one or more compute GPUs on request – contact us to discuss requirements.

What is the Punch Technology EPYC Pedestal Compute Server best suited for?

This system is primarily suited to CPU-bound sustained compute workloads that require more cores, more memory, and more memory bandwidth than a conventional desktop or workstation can provide, but where the user does not have or does not want dedicated rack infrastructure. Engineering teams running Ansys Fluent, OpenFOAM, ABAQUS, or Star-CCM+ will find the 96-core EPYC 9655P and 384GB of 12-channel DDR5 ECC memory materially reduces simulation run times compared to 8 to 16 core workstations. Software developers and DevOps teams running large-scale builds in GCC, Clang, Bazel, or similar toolchains will see substantial compilation time reductions. Researchers running Python, R, Julia, or MATLAB workloads that require large in-memory datasets benefit directly from the 384GB memory capacity.

Where does this system sit in the Punch Technology server and workstation range?

This is a single-socket EPYC platform occupying the space between a high-end desktop workstation and a dual-socket server. It delivers significantly more CPU and memory performance than any desktop or workstation CPU platform, while remaining quieter, more accessible, and more cost-effective than a dual-socket EPYC system or a full rackmount server. It is not optimised for GPU compute out of the box – the included NVIDIA T400 is a display and visualisation GPU only. Where substantial GPU compute is also required alongside high CPU core counts, our dual-socket EPYC configurations or multi-GPU systems are more appropriate. For workloads that are primarily CPU and memory bound, this pedestal system delivers the best performance-per-pound and acoustics-per-core of any system we build.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What software and workloads does this system support?

This system runs Ubuntu Linux 24.04 LTS and is suited to engineering simulation tools including Ansys Fluent, OpenFOAM, ABAQUS, Star-CCM+, and COMSOL Multiphysics. It supports HPC and research environments including MATLAB, Python, R, Julia, and NumPy/SciPy-based workloads. Virtualisation platforms including KVM, QEMU, Proxmox, and VMware ESXi run well on the SP5 platform with 96 cores and 384GB of ECC memory. For software compilation, it supports GCC, Clang, Rust toolchains, Bazel, and similar large-scale build systems. Alternative Linux distributions are available on request.

Why choose a desk-side pedestal server over a rackmount system?

Rackmount servers require dedicated rack enclosures, structured cabling, and often raised flooring or dedicated server room cooling. They are also significantly louder than this pedestal system. This platform delivers the same SP5 CPU and memory architecture as a 1U or 2U rackmount server in a full-tower chassis that operates quietly enough for shared office use, requires no specialist infrastructure, and sits alongside the user for direct access. For teams that need EPYC-class compute but do not have or want a dedicated server room, this system is the practical solution.

Can storage be expanded beyond the included 1TB NVMe drive?

Yes. The Gigabyte MZ33-AR1 provides additional M.2 slots for NVMe expansion, PCIe Gen 5 expansion slots that can accommodate NVMe add-in cards, and multiple MCIO 8i ports that support direct high-speed NVMe storage expansion without occupying PCIe slots. This makes the platform well suited to workloads that require multi-drive storage configurations or very high storage bandwidth. Contact us to discuss specific storage expansion requirements before ordering if this is important for your workload.

Does this system include redundant power supplies?

No. To achieve low acoustic output for desk-side operation, this system uses a Lian Li SX Platinum 1200W 80+ Platinum ATX 3.1 PSU rather than a redundant hot-swap PSU configuration. The Lian Li SX Platinum runs fanless below 40% load and uses Japanese capacitors backed by a 10-year warranty, making it an excellent fit for an office or laboratory environment where noise matters and where occasional downtime for maintenance is acceptable. This system is not intended for mission-critical data centre deployment where zero-downtime redundancy is required. If redundant PSU configuration is a firm requirement for your workload, please contact us to discuss alternative platform options.

Who is this system best suited for?

This system is best suited to engineers, researchers, software developers, and IT teams who need high CPU core counts, large ECC memory capacity, and professional networking in a quiet, accessible desk-side form factor. Specifically, it is the right choice for engineers running simulation software such as Ansys, OpenFOAM, or ABAQUS who currently wait too long for their workstation to complete jobs; research teams working with large in-memory datasets that exceed standard workstation RAM limits; virtualisation and lab environment administrators who want a capable hypervisor host without a server room; and software development teams running large-scale compilation or CI workloads. It is not the right choice for users who need GPU compute as their primary workload – for those requirements, our multi-GPU configurations are more appropriate.

Can the configuration be customised?

Yes. CPU model, memory capacity, additional NVMe storage, GPU compute accelerators, PCIe networking cards, and operating system can all be customised. If you require a specific EPYC model, a different memory configuration, an alternative Linux distribution, or the addition of a GPU compute card, please contact us to discuss your requirements before ordering. We have experience configuring this platform for a wide range of engineering, research, and infrastructure workloads.
