Ryzen systems are a great choice for users wishing to obtain maximum multitasking performance with a limited budget. AMD Ryzen 7 processors can compete with Intel’s near flagship i7-8700K, but at a significantly lower cost.

The launch of the Ryzen processor lineup marks a giant leap forward in processor technology for AMD. Many review websites have awarded AMD with recommendations and ‘Best Buy’ accolades for their Ryzen processors. The Ryzen CPU is now almost able to keep up with Intel in single threaded performance but offer a huge advantage in terms of multi threaded performance.
Real world results will depend on the software applications you run on the PC but as a general rule, software designed to be used with multi-core processors such as photo editing, video editing and many scientific and commercial applications will benefit from AMDs greater core count. Older software designed to run on single core processors may have a performance benefit from Intel processors due to their faster clock speed.
Game performance will very much depend on the game and how much benefit is gained from the greater number of cores but many games still perform better with higher clock speeds rather than more processor cores.

Motherboards for the new AMD Ryzen processors are available with 5 chipset variants but here at Punch Technology, we decided to focus on boards featuring only the A320, B450 and X470 chipsets. We believe these chipsets offer the best combination of value and performance.
Both the B450 and X470 chipsets offer overclocking capabilities. The B450 is a performance oriented chipset with sufficient features for most users. The X470 is an enthusiast product offering additional PCIe lanes for potentially higher graphics performance via SLI or crossfire configurations. The X470 also features better SATA and M.2 connectivity and a more advanced USB controller.
Some high end X470 motherboards can also work with higher frequency memory which can significantly increase your system performance. We would suggest choosing an X470 chipset motherboard for the highest performance potential.
Its especially important to choose the right memory for your Ryzen system as performance scales very well with increased memory bandwidth.
Ryzen motherboards are not compatible with every available memory speed but we will only show memory compatible with your choice of motherboard during the configuration process.
Customers should note that 3000MHz memory will run at 2933MHz in Ryzen systems due to chipset limitations.
During the PC build process, we will ensure the BIOS of your computer is configured to make the most of the available performance from your chosen memory. We don’t recommend that customers change these settings as system stability can be easily affected by changes to memory settings.
Your choice of storage is important to overall system performance as well as defining the amount of local storage space available on your PC. Windows will read and write many files to your storage drive both during boot up and during the normal course of operation. Using a slow storage drive will make your PC feel sluggish and can be frustrating to use.
Solid state drives (SSD) are far faster than traditional hard disk drives but they don’t usually have as high a capacity and they tend to cost more. Most customers would be advised to specify an SSD of at least 120GB as the primary storage drive as this will contain the OS and will be used to boot the PC. This will give the greatest benefit to how fast the PC feels in normal use and how quickly it boots up or resumes from sleep. If you can afford it, we would recommend specifying an SSD of 256GB or 512GB as you will tend to prefer to store some frequently used data and application files on the SSD due to its high performance.
SSD come in a variety of types and performance. The leap in performance from a HDD to an SSD is massive but performance gains can also be had by moving from a traditional SSD to an NVMe SSD.
Most customers will also wish to specify a second storage drive and we recommend specifying a traditional HDD for the secondary drive. This will enable the use of high capacity storage drives which will offer adequate performance for photos, videos and applications used less often or data which is not so performance critical.
Your choice of graphics card will have the highest influence on game frame rates of any of your PC components. If you intend to use your PC mainly for playing the latest game titles then you will want to specify a high performance graphics card. Some commercial software can also leverage the performance of the graphics processing unit (GPU) to vastly improve the efficiency and performance of their software.
Whilst a top end graphics card won’t help improve your general PC performance in most Windows applications or make it feel any more responsive, it can improve the quality of game visuals and improve the smoothness of images reproduced from games and 4k videos.
High performance graphic cards are also compatible with virtual reality and can display smooth stereoscopic video in high resolution. This Ryzen gaming PC has been specified with a graphics card more than capable of offering a smooth VR experience but for higher performance and detail requirements please use our configurator to upgrade the card.
